Circular Economy for Textiles: Taking Responsibility to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Textile Waste and Boosting Markets for Used Textiles

The European Commission has put forth a groundbreaking proposal to hold textile producers accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products while supporting sustainable management of textile waste across the EU. This initiative aims to accelerate the development of the textile recycling sector, in line with the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles, by increasing the availability of used textiles and reducing the environmental impact of textile production. The Commission’s proposal introduces mandatory and harmonized Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes for textiles in all EU Member States.
